Info:
The Viperfish is a fierce deep-ocean predator with a giant mouth and long teeth that point backwards to make sure no prey escapes from its jaws.
Many deep sea fish look like monsters from a horror film, with large heads, huge mouths and fierce teeth with long thin bodies, yet most of these deep-sea horrors are very small, less than 30 cm (1 ft) long.
Deep sea fish scientists know very little about deep sea fish because of the difficulties of descending to the ocean bottom to study them.
Most deep sea-fish would not servive if they were brought to the serface.
Some would explode, because there bodies are built to withstand the great pressure of the ocean depths.
A century ago, scienctists believed that no life could exist at great ocean depths.
Now we know that creatures do servive there, but conditions are very harsh.
A thousand metres (3.330 feet) below the sunlight surface, the water is pitch black and very cold.
Deep sea fish must be able to stand the great pressure caused by the wieght of the water on top of them, which would kill surface creatures. |
