The Black Marlin is the largest of the Istiopherinae , reaching a maximum length of 15 feet and more than 1000 pounds in weight. The world record is 1560 lbs with trophy catches being females since the males do not exeed 300 lbs. However, the normal range is 150 to 300 lbs. This species is not easy to confuse with other billfish with exception of the blue Marlin. These are monster animals and should be handled with extreme caution, the spear is very dangerous.
